Portulacaria is a small genus of easy-growing succulent plants, ranging from small compact plants to large tree-like shrubs. The genus is found mainly in South Africa, but also in Namibia and Swaziland.
Portulacaria afra is known as the Spekboom (Afrikaans) or as Elephant food (English). In the Eastern Cape province of South Africa these plants make up a great part of the Elephants diet that lives in these thickets.
The variability in the genus, specifically in P. afra, presents an array of plant forms, sizes, leaf shapes, sizes and colours and they make excellent plants for container gardening, bonsai, the rockery or used in larger landscapes as ground-covers, shrubs or small trees.
